LG Display’s ‘Human-Friendly’ OLED TV and Monitor Panels Certified as Supportive of Circadian Rhythms
2024.10.14SEOUL, Korea (October 6, 2024) – LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that its entire lineup of OLED TV and monitor panels, from 27 to 97 inches, have become the world’s first displays to receive Eyesafe® Circadian Certification. The recognition by Eyesafe, a U.S. -based company specializing in blue light mitigation solutions, reaffirms the advantages of LG Display’s OLED panels for promoting eye health and better sleep.
Human circadian rhythms repeat around every 24 hours. They are maintained by key hormones such as melatonin, which induces sleep, and have been found to be disrupted by nighttime exposure to screens.
Eyesafe has developed the Circadian Protection Factor (CPF) evaluation by assessing the proportion of blue light emitted by a screen and its impact on melatonin secretion. LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels achieved the highest circadian certification rating (CPF 50) as they emit just 36% blue light, which is the lowest in the industry.
Despite less blue light being associated with the distortion of on-screen colors, LG Display's self-emissive OLED TV and monitor panel pixels are able to maintain excellent color reproduction while minimizing their impact on circadian rhythms.
The Eyesafe Vision Health Advisory Board, composed of top global ophthalmologists and optometrists, endorses LG Display's OLED TV and monitor panels as an excellent choice for those seeking superior image quality with reduced impact on sleep.
In July, LG Display and Kookmin University confirmed the results of a clinical trial demonstrating that watching mini LED TV panels in the evening led to a 2.7% decrease in melatonin secretion among subjects, compared to an 8.1% increase among those viewing OLED TVs.
In addition to reduced blue light, LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels’ benefits for eye health have been recognized by reputable global certifiers, including receiving UL Solutions' Flicker Free and Intertek's Reflection Free certifications.
“We will provide differentiated customer value with human-friendly OLED that not only delivers the best image quality but also considers the health of users,” said Hyeon-woo Lee, Senior Vice President and Head of Large Display Business Unit at LG Display.
